On1 Culture: Square Off, The New York City Take Over, @squareoff

Square Off is one of the premier up and coming rap groups out of NYC. The group is headed up by emcees Trip, Slim, and Nick Gleamz, backed up by DJ CMS. Each member brings his own personality and flavor to the group, mixing in a myriad of sounds and styles drawn from the New York scene. With their deft abilities to blend old school and new, it’s no surprise these guys are descended from hip-hop royalty.

Trips and Slim are the sons of the World’s Greatest Entertainer,
Doug E. Fresh, who is also the brother-in-law of Nick Gleamz. Under such esteemed guidance, these princes of hip-hop have been at it since the age of
10. It’s obvious to see where mentor Doug E. Fresh (who has performed and recorded with the group) has rubbed off on the young pioneers.

Square Off follows what they call a “New Old School” style, which pays homage to the old school roots while mixing in a fresh, new sound. One needs only to listen to their mix tape “Last of a Dying Breed” to get a sense of their era-defying sound. The mix tape is dominated by hot club jams mixed in with a few old-school gems.

With their ability to combine the latest styles with vintage R&B grooves, Square Off are sure to have something for everyone and they’re definitely a group to watch out for.
