“Electro Chaabi” illustrates the world of mahraganat music; In Cairo’s underprivileged Al-Salam City neighborhood centers, emergence and development
of an Egyptian hip-hop music genre. “Mahraganat” musicians are a replacement
of Western hip-hop rhythms with Middle Eastern rhythmic patterns known as
maqsoum, both folk with electro beats. Lyrics in Arabic describes “Mahraganat” musicians’
life realities and hardships, depicting on a variety of socio-political
issues around the way.
The film was produced by IPS and Studio Masr and released in 2013, written and directed by Hind Meddeb. The film has gain notoriety through many international outlets.
