In the City: Joseph Grima The New Director at IDEAS CITY

Joseph Grima: "It's an honor to take the helm of IDEAS CITY, an initiative that I have admired for its ability to mobilize entire cities to rethink the value of art and culture in the urban realm. Culture itself is a form of social innovation, and the IDEAS CITY platform is poised to deliberate, instigate, and ask questions about the future needs of our cities. At its inception, IDEAS CITY proposed a new and innovative model for investigating the role of culture in city-making, and we will continue to develop new approaches to address the extraordinary opportunities and challenges facing cities in the twenty-first century."

IDEAS CITY began in 2011, there were few conferences on urban futures and none sponsored by a museum. In its relatively short life span, IDEAS CITY has grown into a unique and robust platform that addresses some of the key challenges and opportunities facing cities around the world today, with the belief that art and culture are essential to their future vitality.

Newly appointed director of IDEAS CITY Joseph Grima will help with the institution's high-profile ideas festival that explores the future of cities with culture as a driving force. IDEAS CITY builds on the New Museum's mission of "New Art, New Ideas" by expanding the Museum beyond its walls into the civic realm.

Grima has been part of IDEAS CITY since its inception, as an advisor, participant, moderator, and, in 2013, guest curator of the seminal design exhibition 'Adhocracy,' which he adapted for the New Museum from its original presentation at the Istanbul Design Biennial.
